Ian Blackford MP has slammed Jeremy Corbyn for confirming he is willing to throw his support behind Theresa May’s disastrous Brexit deal.

The SNP's Westminster Leader criticised the Labour leader following his letter to the Prime Minister today that set out Labour’s position for helping the Prime Minister push her previously defeated deal over the line.

The SNP has consistently called on both Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn to back its calls to stop the clock and extend Article 50, take a no-deal Brexit off the table and bring forward legislation for a second EU referendum.

Yesterday, a leaked report drawn up by the Labour affiliated transport union TSSA revealed that the Labour party could lose over 40 seats - including five in Scotland - in a snap general election unless it shifts away from its pro-Brexit stance.

The document added that if Labour failed to oppose Brexit then there “is every indication that it will be far more damaging to the party’s electoral fortunes than the Iraq war.”

Last week, the Labour Leader refused to take action against his MPs who defied the party whip and opposed Yvette Cooper’s Brexit amendment which sought to extend Article 50, leading to its defeat.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“Jeremy Corbyn’s confirmation that he will throw support behind Theresa May’s disastrous Brexit deal is a severe blow to businesses, workers and people across the UK who are rightly concerned over the impact of Brexit.

“The attempt by the Labour leader to mask this as anything other than support for a Tory-driven, economy-wrecking Brexit deal is utterly disingenuous.

“Labour under Jeremy Corbyn has shifted from being the Official Opposition to the official facilitator for a Tory hard Brexit that will hit jobs and living standards across the UK.

“With 50 days left till Brexit day, Scotland finds itself being dragged towards the cliff-edge by both Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn.

“Time is fast running out and the SNP has been consistently clear - the Prime Minister must take the threat of a no-deal off the table and she can do so by extending Article 50. There is still time for Jeremy Corbyn to work with the other opposition parties in holding this Tory government to account. That must be the priority.

“It is clear that under every scenario Brexit will leave us all worse off - there is no such thing as a good Brexit. If Jeremy Corbyn is intent on helping Theresa May drag Scotland off the Brexit cliff-edge then it will demonstrate yet again that Scotland's national interests can only be protected with independence.”

Not opposing Brexit could lose Labour 45 seats, says leaked report:
