The SNP has urged Scotland’s Secretary of State to make clear what steps the UK government will take to halt the earmarked closure of 15 Scottish branches of Santander.

SNP MP Angela Crawley will lead a debate in Parliament today (Thursday), calling on the bank to undertake a full consultation with staff and local communities before any decisions are finalised on branch closures.

The bank announced plans to close 15 branches in Scotland, which will have a devastating impact on staff, customers and local firms. Branches earmarked to close are in Alloa, Bathgate, Brechin, Edinburgh, Forfar, Glasgow, Kirkcaldy, Lanark, Renfrew, St Andrews, and Troon.

Commenting, Angela Crawley MP said:

“The news of these 15 Santander branch closures has been devastating for many across Scotland, and the bank must halt these closures until it has undertaken a full consultation with staff and local communities.

“In addition to much valued local employment, bank branches provide day-to-day services
that many local businesses depend on for their operations. It would be a huge loss to Scotland to see these branches shut their doors and could leave a significant number of elderly and vulnerable people without the preferred or necessary level of face-to-face service.

“It’s now time for Scotland’s Secretary of State to step up and get round the table with cross-party representatives to outline exactly what action the UK government will take to halt these closures.”
