The SNP has called on Jeremy Corbyn to end the “political posturing” and instead work with the opposition parties to end the Brexit deadlock as the UK hurtles towards the Brexit cliff-edge.

Responding to Jeremy Corbyn’s comments today, SNP MP Stephen Gethins warned that the Labour leader’s inaction in holding the Tory government to account, and consistent refusal to work with the SNP, Lib Dems, Greens and Plaid Cymru, has enabled Theresa May to push ahead with her government’s disastrous Brexit plans – including with the threat of a no-deal.

Last month, the Westminster leaders of the SNP, Lib Dems, Greens and Plaid Cymru tabled a motion of no confidence in the UK government under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act last month. However, Jeremy Corbyn refused to back it.

Commenting, Stephen Gethins MP said:

“Jeremy Corbyn today failed to get off the fence or commit to working with opposition parties to protect jobs and livelihoods by bringing to an end the Tories’ chaotic and incompetent plans. Instead, he simply delivered a speech riddled with hollow rhetoric.

"It is high time the Labour leader ended the political posturing.

"He must not join Theresa May in running down the clock to Brexit just to avoid having to make a decision on a second EU referendum.

“Despite Jeremy Corbyn's comments on holding a no-confidence vote at some unknown time in the future, the reality is that last month when the SNP - alongside party leaders from the Lib Dems, Greens and Plaid Cymru - tabled a motion of no confidence in the UK government under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act, the Labour leader repeatedly refused to back it.

“When the Official Opposition failed to step up to the mark, the real opposition stepped in to hold the UK government to account.

“Whilst Labour pathetically play catch-up, the SNP will not stand by as the clock ticks down and the economy, workers' rights and livelihoods are threatened.

“If Jeremy Corbyn is intent on protecting jobs and living standards, then I call on him to work with the SNP in bringing this Brexit deadlock to an end and support a second EU referendum.”
