NFU Scotland has warned that a no-deal Brexit could turn the UK into a "third-world country" when it comes to trade.

Speaking on Good Morning Scotland, Andrew McCornick said that a no-deal Brexit could lead to a “knee-jerk reaction to bring food in from anywhere, and definitely not at [EU] standards.” He claimed that Brexit has already put Scottish farmers “competitively at a disadvantage” and outlined fears that rushing into “panic deals” with other countries could undercut Scottish produce.
Mr McCornick also warned that a no-deal Brexit could cause “panic buying” and “widespread disruption” in supermarkets.
The SNP have opposed Tory plans to make desperate trade deals with countries like the US due to fears of lower food standards, the use of harmful chemicals in produce, and risk to consumers.
Commenting, SNP MSP Maureen Watt said:
“The huge threat to Scotland’s farming industry from a Tory extreme Brexit is becoming clearer by the day.
“With the farming and food production sectors set to lose the benefits that the EU market currently affords to Scotland, it’s little wonder that farmers are calling on Tories to make future trade with Europe a priority – rather than pursuing dodgy deals with the US.
“The Tories must go back to the drawing board if they believe that new trade deals which lower food standards and undercut Scottish produce are in the best interests of their constituents.
“By undermining the value of quality Scottish produce, and risking our access to the EU market of 500 million consumers, the UK government could cause long-lasting harm to our food and drink sector - hitting businesses and destroying jobs across Scotland.
“The Tories must now decide whether to protect the interests of Scottish farmers or betray them.”
