SNP MP Mhairi Black has slammed the UK government as December foodbank referrals are expected to be the highest of 2018.

Latest output from the Trussell Trust shows that more people than ever are expected to have to turn to foodbanks this Christmas, following an annual trend based on the charity’s figures. Last December saw a 49% increase on the monthly average for the 2017-18 financial year and the charity expects this December will be the busiest month for foodbanks in the UK on record.
Serious concerns have been raised about the ability for benefits to cover essential living costs as well as the minimum five week wait for the first Universal Credit payment for those moving onto the system, which has been blamed for many households relying on a referral to a foodbank. Referrals due to problems with Universal Credit rouse to 31% compared to 16% for the same period last year.
Commenting, Mhairi Black MP said:
“In households across Scotland, the pain of Tory austerity is felt more severely than ever before. As The Trussell Trust expect foodbank use over Christmas to be at a record high, the Tories' must hang their heads in shame over their heartless benefit cuts and punitive sanctions regime.
“In a supposedly developed part of the world in the 21st century, it’s an absolute disgrace that people are forced to turn to the voluntary sector for help. We know from the Trussell Trust’s statistics that benefit delays and changes make up the biggest portion of reasons why people are referred to food banks. In particular, referrals due to problems with Universal Credit rose 15% compared to the same period last year.
“The heart-wrenching stories behind each and every number should give this Tory government cause to halt their ideologically-driven austerity agenda and restore value and support to the social security system.”
