The SNP’s Westminster leader, Ian Blackford MP, has said that the Prime Minister’s “time is up” having returned from the EU Summit empty handed and delayed the vote on her Brexit deal till next year.

Leading an emergency debate secured by the SNP on the Prime Minister’s Brexit proposals following her failure to bring forward her meaningful vote before the Christmas recess, Ian Blackford MP warned that the delay was “a total abdication of responsibility" causing even greater uncertainty and instability.

The SNP has also described Jeremy Corbyn’s no confidence motion in the Prime Minister as a “gimmick” after calling on the Labour leader to table a Vote of No Confidence in the UK government under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“The Prime Minister has returned from Brussels empty handed following the EU Summit where the EU27 spoke clearly with one voice - the Withdrawal Agreement is not up for renegotiation. It is clear that Theresa May’s time is up.

“The UK government has hit a dead end and Parliament must now take control of the Brexit process to break the deadlock by asking the people in a second EU referendum.

“Theresa May’s decision to delay the vote till next year is an abdication of responsibility and causes even greater uncertainty and instability. The Prime Minister is playing a dangerous game of trying to lock out all other alternatives to the Brexit process by seeking to make it a binary choice of her deal or no-deal.

“The SNP has been working with the Lib Dems, Plaid Cymru and the Greens to break the deadlock. Last night the SNP tabled a cross-party amendment to Labour’s motion which makes the no confidence motion in the UK government, not just the Prime Minister. Labour must meaningfully work with the other opposition parties.

“Now is the time for the Prime Minister to stand down, for this Tory government to stand aside and to let the people decide."
