SNP MP Gavin Newlands has called on the Prime Minister to offer financial support to people who have been left in debt after signing up to a flawed UK government scheme.

The UK government’s Green Deal offered people the opportunity to pay for energy efficiency improvements through savings on their energy bills. However, companies such as Home Energy and Lifestyle Management Ltd (HELMS), have since been facing allegations of abusing the scheme, and using heavy-pressure sales tactics to sign homes up to 25-year long contracts.

The MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North has previously led a debate on the HELMS scandal in the House of Commons.

Commenting, Gavin Newlands MP said:

“When people see a UK government logo on the paperwork, they expect the highest level of financial security and an exceptional standard of accreditation. Firms like HELMS have used questionable tactics to get a quick sale for installations that consumers often didn’t need.

“This scandal has been a blight on the communities that I represent, with many of my constituents being seriously out of pocket. The UK government have been more concerned with positive PR than seeing a policy implemented properly.

“The Prime Minister’s ignorance on this issue is staggering and it is ultimately her Tory government that is responsible for cleaning up this mess. I urge the Prime Minister to act now to provide immediate financial redress to my constituents and anyone else out of pocket due to Green Deal mis-selling.”
