The SNP has called for the Secretary of State for Scotland to resign if the Prime Minister’s Brexit Withdrawal Agreement is voted down in the House of Commons.

Ahead of his appearance at Scottish Questions today, the SNP accused David Mundell of ‘empty threats’ over his resignation and challenged his support of the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement, which Scottish Government analysis shows is set to cost each person in Scotland £1,600 by 2030.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, David Mundell recently threatened to resign as Secretary of State for Scotland in the event of an extension to the transition deal, and it was widely reported that he would also resign in the event of special trading terms for Northern Ireland.

Commenting, Tommy Sheppard MP said:

“David Mundell has pinned his colours to the mast in his support for the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement. He must be prepared for his bluff to be called on his empty threats and resign if the document fails to muster support in the House of Commons. Otherwise he’s in danger of going down in political history as the boy who cried 'resign'.

“The UK government’s Withdrawal Agreement is set to cost each person in Scotland £1,600 by 2030. It’s ridiculous that a Secretary of State for Scotland can throw his support behind a deal which would see people in Scotland worse off, offering special measures for Northern Ireland but ignoring Scotland’s vote to remain.

“The people of Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU and the Secretary of State’s decision to ignore the will of the people in Scotland is a democratic outrage. His support for the Withdrawal Agreement is unforgivable and the people of Scotland will be watching to see whether the Secretary of State will put himself on the line - or if he is happy to vote through any Brexit deal, regardless of the cost to Scotland.”
