An SNP MP has called on the UK government to undertake a full review of the sale of fireworks in the UK, as the House of Commons debates the issue today.

Patricia Gibson MP, SNP Consumer Affairs spokesperson, is calling for the review in response to concerns raised by constituents about the buying and selling of fireworks. The MP for North Ayrshire and Arran wants the UK government to review the law to ensure it is fit for purpose and to see what additional safeguards could be introduced.

The MP has cited recent issues around community safety, and the welfare of pets and livestock, as one example of why the law must be reviewed to stop fireworks from making their way into the wrong hands.

Commenting, Patricia Gibson MP said:

“Fireworks can be a great way for people to mark celebrations but this must not be at the expense of the well being and safety of families and communities.

"It is time for the UK government to undertake a full review of the sale of fireworks to ensure the law is fit for purpose and to consider what additional safeguards can be introduced to ensure fireworks are sold responsibly and to stop them falling into the wrong hands.

“The SNP government has worked hard to get legislation right on the safe use of fireworks in Scotland - with restrictions preventing fireworks being used after 11pm during the majority of the year, and making it a criminal offence to set off fireworks in a public place. Last week, the Scottish Government announced a consultation which will consider tighter control on the use of fireworks, which has been welcomed by many of my own constituents.

"The sale of fireworks is reserved to Westminster, and it is up to the UK government to ensure the law has suitable protections so that fireworks can be bought and sold safely and responsibly.”
