SCOTTISH SALMON INDUSTRY RAISE SERIOUS CONCERNS ON UK WITHDRAWAL AGREEMENT

PRODUCERS’ ORGANISATION OUTLINE NEED FOR FRICTIONLESS TRADE WITH EU

The Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation have said that the UK’s political heads of agreement raise serious questions for the farmed fishing industry.

The Scottish salmon industry - estimated to be worth over £1 billion to the Scottish economy last year - face the prospect of high tariffs and lengthy border checks if the UK Government fail to secure a future trade agreement with Europe by 2021.

Commenting in The Times today, Chief Executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation Julie Hesketh-Laird said:

“This document raises the prospect of tariffs being imposed on exports of farmed fish if there is no agreement on North Sea white fish quotas. It also raises the prospect of border checks for fresh salmon exiting the UK bound for our biggest export market – the EU.”

Commenting, SNP MSP Alasdair Allan said:

“The SSPO have rightly challenged the UK Government to provide assurances to the industry that Scottish salmon exports to the continent will remain tariff-free.

“This inept Tory Government have failed to offer any detail on a future trade agreement with Europe post-2020, leaving Scotland’s massive farmed salmon industry under a cloud of worrying uncertainty.

“Without an agreement for a frictionless border with the EU, we will see lorry-loads of top-quality Scottish salmon going to waste as drivers sit in enormous queues at Dover waiting on customs checks.

“Dragging Scotland out of the European Single Market without a frictionless trade agreement will devastate the industry putting jobs, businesses and livelihoods at risk.
