A new report has revealed that Scotland is outpacing the rest of the UK on transforming energy and tackling climate change - due to its greener transport system and success in shifting from fossil fuel to renewable energy. Scotland also boasts the largest number of jobs in renewables of all the regions in the UK, with the potential to continue growing.

The Imperial College London and E4Tech report highlights that "the Scottish energy system really stands out from other UK regions" and praises Scotland for "leading in several areas" as well as "acting as an example for energy transition."

In October, it was reported that 98% of Scotland's electricity was produced by wind turbines, with the SNP government on track to produce all of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

Commenting, SNP MSP Gillian Martin said:

“Safe, green energy is essential for the future of our economy, and this report clearly recognises the steps this SNP government has taken towards unlocking energy opportunities for industry, businesses and households in Scotland. Millions of families are now equipped to enjoy cheaper energy bills and better prospects for the future.

“Our commitment to renewable energy is one of the many reasons that Scotland is seen as a world-leader in the fight to combat climate change.

“This is in stark contrast to the Tories’, who are presiding over wholesale cuts to renewables. And this is at a time when other nations in the EU and across the world make the transition to a low carbon economy.

"This report is yet more proof that the SNP has the right approach when it comes to powering Scotland's future.

"But Scotland needs full control over energy policy, so we can keep investing wisely, creating jobs, and protecting our environment."
