SNP MPs, MSPs, and councillors will today campaign in towns across the length and breadth of Scotland to prevent the closure of under-threat RBS bank branches.

The SNP politicians and community campaigners will collect petition signatures demanding the UK government finally intervene to prevent 62 local RBS banks from closing.

Last month RBS announced a reprieve for ten of the most remote branches, after direct talks with SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford. The SNP welcomed the move but warned it did not go far enough, and continued the campaign to save the remaining branches.

The SNP have raised the issue repeatedly at Prime Ministers Questions and in parliamentary debates. Yet, despite being a majority shareholder in RBS, the Tory government has refused to intervene or do anything to prevent the closures.

Commenting Ian Blackford MP said:

“Today the SNP are campaigning in towns across Scotland to prevent these vital local banks from closing.

“The Tory government has the power and responsibility to act but instead they have refused to do anything. They are failing our communities and letting Scotland down.

“SNP pressure has led to a reprieve for ten of the most remote branches – but our fight to save the remaining banks continues. The pressure is now on the Tory government to take the long-overdue action needed to halt these damaging and flawed plans.

“The SNP will continue to stand up for local people and businesses who will lose out if the Tory government continues to dismiss their concerns, and let RBS off the hook.

“RBS must go back to the drawing board, ditch these mass closure plans, and maintain their social responsibility to the communities that spent billions bailing them out.”
