Commenting following Jeremy Corbyn’s speech to Labour’s Scottish conference today, the SNP described the Labour leader’s backing for the Tories’ extreme Brexit outside the single market at “shameful”.

It is widely accepted that leaving the European single market will deliver a major hit to the Scottish and UK economies, costing jobs, cutting investment and lowering living standards.

But Labour, north and south of the border, are continuing to back the Tories in the drive to take Scotland out of the world’s biggest single market against its will.

Commenting, SNP MSP Clare Haughey said:

“Nothing we heard today from Jeremy Corbyn can disguise the fact that he and Labour are backing the Tories’ plans to take Scotland out of the single market against our will.

“Rather than taking action to help block that looming disaster, they are blindly supporting plans to leave the single market – which the UK government admits will have a devastating impact on Scotland’s economy.

“Labour’s eagerness to support the Tory Brexit plans is shameful and utterly inexcusable – and the fact that the Labour conference has tried to shut down debate on the issue it shows how out of touch they are.

“Jeremy Corbyn and Richard Leonard are the Tories’ willing helpers for an extreme Brexit that will destroy Scottish jobs, hit investment and exports, and damage living standards for communities the length and breadth of the country – and they should be ashamed of that.”

The Labour conference comes after Labour voted against the SNP’s budget, which is providing progressive reforms to income tax in Scotland to help tackle austerity measures being delivered by the Tories at Westminster; ending the public sector pay cap, to give nurses a pay rise; and giving £120 million directly to schools to help end the poverty-related attainment gap.

Ms Haughey added:

“The SNP always has and always will deliver progressive government for the people of Scotland – while Labour continue to stand with the Tories.

“Just last month, they voted against changes to income tax that deliver tax cuts for the majority and tax increases for those that can afford to contribute more, and voted against significant extra funding for our NHS and our schools.

“And at Westminster, Labour backed some of the cruellest austerity measures that continue to cripple our local communities, and which the SNP Scottish Government is doing all it can to mitigate.

“That is the reality of Labour under Corbyn and Leonard, and people all over Scotland can see it.”
