Independence will stop Westminster treating Scotland with contempt, SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown has said.

Brexit demonstrates that the Tories now think they can do anything they want to Scotland and get away with it.

With the deadline to agree a deal with the EU rapidly approaching, the UK Cabinet has yet to agree a coherent negotiating position amongst itself.

The approach taken by Theresa May – and endorsed by Labour – will see the UK left outside of the single market, which is eight times the size of the UK alone, even if a deal can be agreed.

But due to internal Tory bickering over the Irish backstop – already signed-up to by the UK government – the prospect of a No Deal Brexit remains very real.

A No Deal scenario could lead to flights being grounded and disruptions to food supplies, according to warnings – and any Brexit deal would see serious long-term economic damage done to Scotland.

Keith Brown commented:

“In any Tory Brexit scenario, Scotland suffers.

“Scotland voted overwhelmingly to Remain in the EU – but we’re being dragged out anyway.

“When the SNP put forward sensible compromise proposals of Norway-style single market membership, we’re told that Westminster knows best.

“Independent Ireland has been shown nothing but solidarity by its EU partners, but Scotland has been shown nothing but contempt by Westminster.

“Independence will put an end to that treatment and will mean a proper partnership of equals – rather than a broken Westminster system which leaves Scotland tied to an increasingly right-wing Tory government.

“That message of hope stands in stark contrast to a UK trapped in never-ending Brexit despair.”
