Theresa May’s plan for “solving the housing crisis” in England has hit a brick wall, as it was revealed that more than half of local authorities will miss out on funding for new low-cost homes.

Reports in the Independent revealed that more than half of England’s local authorities are going to miss out on funding for housebuilding, because the government changes will only benefit some councils.
The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) said that fewer than 9,000 new homes would be built over the next five and a half years – falling short of the 10,000 per year promised by Theresa May.
Meanwhile, the Scottish Government invested over £1.7 billion in affordable housing over the last parliamentary term.
Under SNP rule, over a five-year period there were more council homes built in Scotland than England. Despite being ten times smaller, 5,667 council homes were delivered in Scotland, compared to 5,330 in England.
James Dornan MSP, Convener of Holyrood’s Local Government and Communities Committee said:

“Whilst the Tories at Westminster are presiding over a housing crisis south of the border, the Scottish Government is taking decisive action to deliver more houses.
“In fact, we’ve delivered more council houses than our neighbour south of the border – a country ten times our size.
“Once again Scotland is outperforming England, and moving ever-closer to our goal of making sure that everyone in Scotland has a safe and affordable home.
“This demonstrates the clear difference between the SNP and the Tories – while the SNP is committed to building towards the future, the Tories are cutting our funding and trying to drag Scotland backwards.
