SCOTTISH FARMERS CALL ON UK GOV TO SECURE FUTURE TRADE WITH EUROPE

UK GOV TRADE DEAL PLANS UNDERMINE SCOTTISH FARMING INDUSTRY

An SNP MSP has called on the UK Government to listen to the fears of Scottish farmers and “go back to the drawing board” in order to secure a post-Brexit trade deal with the European Union – amid fears that new trade deals with the US and others could undermine food and animal welfare standards.

Responding to a UK government consultation on trade agreements with Australia, New Zealand and the United States, NFU Scotland President Andrew McCornick has called on Theresa May to prioritise a trade deal with Europe or risk undermining the standards of Scottish produce.

President Trump’s Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, has only added to concerns by outlining continued adherence to environmental, workplace and animal welfare standards could present “landmines” in the way of a trade deal with the US.

The National Farmers Union, Scotland (NFUS) supports the Scottish Government’s position that all decisions affecting agriculture in Scotland should be taken in Scotland.

Commenting, SNP MSP Maureen Watt said:

“The UK Government is ignoring calls from Scotland’s farmers to secure future trade with Europe as a priority – rather than pursuing a dodgy trade deal with Trump.

“Blocking our farmers from trading freely with the European Union post-Brexit would be catastrophic to the industry here in Scotland.

“Thanks to the Tory power grab, we face the real threat of chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected beef in Scottish supermarkets – undermining the high standards of our own producers.

“The UK Government must go back to the drawing board if they believe that new trade deals that lower food or animal welfare standards are in the best interests of Scottish farmers.”
