TORY BUDGET SHOWS ONLY INDEPENDENCE OFFERS HOPE FOR BETTER FUTURE

AUSTERITY AND BREXIT IMPOSED ON SCOTLAND SHOWS NEEDS TO TAKE CONTROL OF OWN FUTURE

Independence will allow Scotland to become a fairer country – instead of being tied to endless Tory austerity, SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown has said.

This week’s Budget saw the Tory government give a tax cut to the wealthiest while continuing to punish working and low-income families, exposing continuing austerity as a political choice.

Philip Hammond failed to heed calls to fix Universal Credit, introduce a real Living Wage or scrap the two-child cap – which puts 150,000 Scottish children at greater risk of poverty.

Meanwhile, the UK government’s continued brinksmanship risks a No Deal Brexit that would cause enormous economic damage to Scotland – despite our overwhelming vote to Remain in the EU.

Commenting, Keith Brown said:

“The Tories think they can do whatever they want to Scotland and get away with it – and Westminster now treats Scotland with open contempt.

“Independence will allow Scotland to become a fairer country – instead of being tied to the endless Tory austerity seen in the Budget.

“Theresa May boasted that austerity was over – but the Tories have given a tax cut to the well-off, and yet more austerity to struggling families.

“Universal Credit is still broken. The minimum wage is still not a real Living Wage. And the threat of a No Deal Brexit remains.

“Austerity is a political choice – and it’s one imposed by a Tory government with no mandate in Scotland.

“Just as the continued threat of a No Deal Brexit – with the enormous economic damage that would cause – comes despite Scotland voting overwhelmingly to Remain.

“Independence will make hope for a better future possible.”
