The SNP has challenged the UK government to commit to 50:50 funding for all future city and growth deals for Scotland – with this week’s budget leaving Tayside £50 million short, after the Chancellor failed to match Scottish Government investment in the region.

The UK government is dragging its heels on progressing growth deals for Ayrshire, Moray and the Borderlands. Monday’s budget was a missed opportunity for the UK government to make a clear commitment on funding and timescale for these major investment projects.
The SNP is calling for these pending growth deals to be delivered as soon as possible, and for the UK government to match every single penny of Scottish Government investment on a 50:50 basis.
Commenting, South Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine said:
“On Monday we got more warm words on future growth deals from the Chancellor – but still no commitment, still no timescale and still no cash promised.
“The UK government has previously said they’d match funding for Scotland’s regions on a 50:50 basis. But this week saw Tayside diddled out of £50 million as they went back on their word.
“That’s utterly shameful when economic prosperity and jobs are on the line. And very noticeably, Scottish Tory MPs have sat back and allowed this to happen.
“David Mundell has been talking up the Borderlands deal for years, but it seems he’s incapable of convincing his cabinet colleagues and he’s failed to deliver.
“So it’s time for a bit of honesty from the Tories. Have they simply given up on Scotland, and abandoned their promises to match investment?
“With the Borderlands, Moray and Ayrshire in the pipeline for hundreds of millions of pounds, we need a straight answer – will Westminster put their money where their mouth is, and match every single penny that comes from the Scottish Government?
“If not, it will send a clear message to those communities that the Tory UK government simply doesn’t care about them.”
