Mhairi Black MP said the Chancellor is hiding behind soundbites whilst continuing to push his ideologically-driven austerity agenda, after fresh statistics were revealed on the cost of Tory cuts in the Budget.

The UK government Budget will cut more money from the benefit freeze in one single year than will be spent on the Work Allowance over three years, figures reveal.

Official statistics from the House of Commons Library, outlined by SNP Social Justice Spokesperson Neil Gray MP in the Commons chamber today, estimate the benefits freeze will cut £4.7 billion from the welfare budget in the year 2019/20, whilst the Chancellor’s investment in the Work Allowance totals only £3.38 billion until 2022.

Commenting, Mhairi Black MP said:

“The Chancellor is trying to hide behind soundbites but just scratching beneath the surface of his budget shows there is no end to the brutal austerity regime the Tories are hell-bent on implementing.

“In this Tory Budget, only half of the cuts to Universal Credit are being reversed, the UK government has failed to deliver a National Living Wage that you can actually live on and they continue with their two-child cap on tax credits - a policy as barbaric as it is stupid.

“Those of us on the SNP benches are not fooled by the Tory fallacy that austerity is over; it is, in fact, just a distraction from the savage cuts that the Tories continue to pile on the poorest and most vulnerable in our society. If this is what Better Together looks like, then Scotland can do so much better than this.”
