Two SNP MPs have pressed the Prime Minister over her government’s treatment of EU nationals who received letters warning that they no longer have the right to live in the UK, or who have had to pay fees simply to remain in the country.

SNP MP Alan Brown raised the case of his constituent; a mother of two who has lived in the UK for decades, yet has now been told by the DWP that 'she does not have a right to reside’ in the country.

Martyn Day MP called on Theresa May to clarify whether or not it is fair on EU nationals – who have lived in the UK for years and made the country their home– to pay fees for their right to stay in the UK after Brexit.

Alan Brown, the MP for Kilmarnock & Loudoun, said:

“My Italian-born constituent has resided in the UK since 1984, she has attended school here, has two children and a British mother. Yet the DWP has decided that she ‘does not have a right to reside’ in the country. This is partly due to my constituent being unable to prove five years of continuous work – a situation many EU nationals will find themselves in when formally applying for settled status.

“The situation of my constituent is not a lone case and it is a familiar story across Scotland and the rest of the UK. The reality is that the UK government’s approach is further alienating EU nationals, harming our economy."

Martyn Day, the MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk, said:

“With only 150 days left before the UK leaves the EU, the Tory government’s treatment of EU nationals has been nothing short of shameful.

“EU citizens contribute massively - not just to our economy - but to our public services and communities, and it is about time the Tory government ended its hostile approach that is creating further uncertainty and instability for millions of our fellow citizens.

“Does the Prime Minister really think it is fair that EU citizens who have made the UK their home, will be forced to dig into their own pockets for fees over their right to remain in the UK?"
