INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: MSP LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR TOURIST TRAIL OF WOMEN’S MONUMENTS

SNP MSP Gillian Martin will mark International Women’s Day by launching a campaign for a tourist trail of Scotland’s monuments to women – and calling on local authorities to do more to recognise the role of women in Scottish history.

The MSP asked each local authority for a list of existing memorials to women, as well as plans for any future developments.

Gillian Martin will now work to develop plans for a tourist trail, highlighting memorials across the country that mark the contribution made by Scottish women. Ms Martin’s research will also contribute to existing efforts to develop a comprehensive list of statues, plaques and other memorials to women in Scotland.

Ms Martin has had positive discussions with Visit Scotland regarding using memorials to Scotland’s women to promote heritage tourism.

Commenting, Gillian Martin said:

“How we commemorate our history is enormously important – it shapes how we understand our society, and is a vital part of our thriving tourism industry.

“But too often our public memorials can be about Kings and Generals and not about the ordinary and extraordinary Scots who’ve shaped our country – and women in particular are shockingly underrepresented.

“Famously, Edinburgh has more statues of animals than of named women. Local authorities across Scotland need to do more to recognise the contribution of women in their area.

“I’m delighted to announce a new initiative to develop a tourist trail of memorials, which would give the public and tourists an easy resource to explore women’s history, as well as supporting existing work to comprehensively map all of Scotland’s monuments to women.

“I hope this is a first step in better recognising the enormous contribution made by women in Scotland.”

The womenofscotland.org.uk website is a crowdsourced resource marking memorials to women across Scotland. Gillian Martin’s research will be shared with this project, which will inform the creation of a tourist trail.
