UK GOV PROMISES TO CLYDE MUST BE KEPT

The UK government are guilty of a “gross betrayal” over broken promises to Scottish shipbuilders, an SNP MSP has said – as the party conference call on the Tories to deliver on their referendum promises.

During the independence referendum campaign, the No campaign said that 13 Type 26 frigates would be built on the Clyde – but that number was later cut to 8, with 5 smaller Type 31e frigates to also be built.

Unions on the Clyde accused the UK government of “betrayal” after it was announced the Type 31e order would go to shipyards across the UK.

Commenting, SNP MSP Stuart McMillan said:

“Scottish shipbuilding has a long and proud history – but for too long has faced decline at the hands of successive UK governments.

“The Scottish Government has invested in our shipbuilding industry and provided support for diversification.

“But UK politicians are guilty of a gross betrayal – promising contracts during a referendum and then backtrack after the result.

“The Tories made promises to workers on the Clyde and they should be kept.”

SHIPBUILDING ON THE CLYDE

Conference believes that shipbuilding on the Clyde has a long and proud history and believes that it is vital that we continue to support this important industry and help it reach its full potential.

Conference welcomes the Scottish Government’s support for our shipyards, including helping find a buyer for Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited (FMEL) in 2014, £1 million investment in 2015 to create and safeguard jobs, and the recent £30 million loan to help FMEL diversify its business by moving into innovative areas, like lowcarbon marine projects, and target decommissioning work.

However, conference believes that the UK Government should match the Scottish Government’s commitment to and ambition for our shipyards and therefore urges the UK Government to deliver on the promises made in 2014 around shipbuilding contracts to the Clyde.
