People in Scotland overwhelmingly back the Scottish Parliament’s right to have the final say on holding an independence referendum, a new poll has found.
When asked who should have the final say on whether an independence referendum should be held, voters back Holyrood over Westminster by 2 to 1 – with 59% supporting the Scottish Parliament and only 30% supporting Westminster.
The new poll, conducted by Survation, has shown that Labour are completely out of touch with their voters on the issue – with 56% of Labour voters supporting the Scottish Parliament’s having the final say.
Commenting, SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown said:
“People in Scotland overwhelmingly believe that it’s the Scottish Parliament, not Westminster, who should have the final say over holding a referendum on independence.
“It is a democratic disgrace that both Labour and the Tories want to stand in the way of the people of Scotland having the right to decide the country’s future.
“Labour’s hardline position on this issue is completely out of touch with their own voters, who by some margin back the SNP’s position.
“As the chaos around Brexit unfolds, support for the right to decide on our future is only going to grow – it’s time for the Westminster parties to stop standing in the way of Scottish democracy.”

Which of the following should have the final say if there should be a referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country?

The Scottish Parliament 59% 26% 56% 89%
The Westminster Parliament 30% 67% 33% 4%
Don’t know 11% 7% 11% 7%
