Uncertainty over Brexit has halted a clinical trial for new heart medicine in a Scottish hospital – underlining the need for the UK government to urgently change its approach to EU negotiations.

Trials were due to take place on patients in the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank as well as Leeds and Exeter using ‘dutogliptin’, a drug intended to be used in conjunction with other medicine to help repair heart tissue after a heart attack. Recardio, the company undertaking the research, has told the BBC that Brexit uncertainty around regulations and the approval of new medicines had created a "very difficult" situation for them.

Concerns have continued to mount since the EU referendum over two years ago that leaving the EU will significantly harm the health service in Scotland. Research as well as staffing are at risk, with a huge drop in the number of EU nurses registering in the UK, and the Royal College of GPs Scotland warning that the country could face an exodus of GPs as a result of Brexit.

SNP MSP Emma Harper, a trained nurse who sits on Holyrood’s Health Committee, commented:

“This lays bare the real impact Brexit is already having on Scotland, before we have even been taken out of the EU.

“We have repeatedly warned that the Tory approach risked damage to the NHS and to medical research. Sadly, this revelation shows that our concerns were well-founded.

“After more than two years, the incompetent Tory government has failed to provide any certainty whatsoever to researchers – harming important clinical research, and proving they can’t be trusted to protect Scotland’s NHS.

"It’s time for the Tories to ditch their plans for a hard Brexit, quit their infighting and commit to staying in the single market and customs union, which is eight times the size of the UK market alone, and which would help safeguard the health of our citizens.”
