The SNP have called on Scottish Labour to make their position on Trident renewal clear, after Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Peace Minister set out plans to scrap the nuclear weapons system.

The ‘defence diversification strategy’ would pave the way for the non-renewal of Trident – despite the UK Labour party supporting renewal.
Labour’s position on the issue of nuclear weapons is chaotic:

  • Jeremy Corbyn has personally stated his opposition to Trident renewal
  • But the UK Labour party are officially in favour of Trident renewal
  • Richard Leonard as Scottish leader has said he is in favour of Trident
  • But the Scottish Labour Party voted against Trident renewal

The SNP has consistently opposed the wasteful and dangerous £200 billion renewal of Trident nuclear weapons.
Commenting, Bill Kidd MSP said;
“Labour is hopelessly at odds on any number of issues – from Brexit to Trident – and the growing divide in the party is becoming clearer by the day.
“Labour’s policy on Trident is all over the place. It is completely and utterly incoherent, and this latest intervention leaves their position as clear as mud.
“Richard Leonard is siding with the Tories in keeping weapons of mass destruction – which are opposed by a majority of Scotland’s MSPs, MPs, by civic society, churches and religious groups – in Scottish waters. And he is doing it against what is supposed to be the official position of Scottish Labour. It’s absolutely shambolic.
“The SNP position is crystal clear – we will never support Trident and will continue to fight against the immoral and unnecessary possession of nuclear weapons.”
