LABOUR MUST STOP ‘PLAYING GAMES’ ON BREXIT AND BACK SINGLE MARKET

CORBYN’S ‘MAN WITHOUT A PLAN’ POSTURING THREATENS JOBS AND ECONOMY

The SNP has said Labour must “stop playing games” on Brexit and nail its colours to the mast by finally backing Scotland and the UK’s vital membership of the single market and customs union.

Following Keir Starmer’s speech to Labour Party conference, SNP Foreign Affairs spokesperson Stephen Gethins MP said Labour still appeared to back the “harmful fundamentals” of a Tory hard Brexit – dragging Scotland out of the EU against its will, and causing huge damage to jobs and the economy by taking the whole of the UK out of the single market and customs union.

The SNP MP for North East Fife said Jeremy Corbyn’s shameless ‘man without a plan’ posturing on Brexit showed a “total absence of leadership” on the most important issue facing the country – and revealed Labour was “not fit for opposition let alone government”.

Commenting, Stephen Gethins MP said:

“It’s time for Labour to stop playing games and finally nail its colours to the mast with a genuine alternative to a Tory extreme Brexit.

“Jeremy Corbyn’s shameless ‘man without a plan’ political posturing is simply not good enough. It is a total absence of leadership on the biggest issue facing the country, and it shows Labour is not fit for opposition let alone government.

“Unbelievably Labour still appear to back the harmful fundamentals of a Tory hard Brexit – dragging Scotland out of the EU against its will, and causing huge damage to jobs and the economy by taking the whole of the UK out of the single market and customs union, which is around eight times bigger than the UK market alone.

“The UK government’s own analysis shows a hard Brexit of the kind Labour support would cost the Scottish economy between 2% and 9% of GDP, putting up to 80,000 jobs on the line, and costing Scotland up to £12.7billion a year – the equivalent of £2,300 lost for every person in the country.

“With just six months to go before the UK crashes out of the EU, it is staggering that Labour have failed to outline a clear alternative to the Tories – and continue to pursue a reckless path that they know will destroy jobs, damage businesses, and inflict lasting harm on the incomes and living standards of millions of people.

“The SNP have been clear all along. Short of staying in the EU, as Scotland voted overwhelmingly for, the best and only way to protect jobs and prosperity is to remain in the single market and customs union. It is time Labour ditched their support for a Tory hard Brexit and joined the SNP in standing up for the interests of the country.”
