LABOUR OFFERS “EMPTY RHETORIC” ON UNIVERSAL CREDIT

The SNP has accused Labour of ‘empty rhetoric’ over Universal Credit, after they announced a review of the Tory policy – despite the problems already being widely known.

Addressing Labour’s conference, Margaret Greenwood MP said the roll-out of Universal Credit should be stopped, which contradicted her earlier comments on scrapping the policy when she told a newspaper, “We're not ruling anything out, because we think it's important to be on top of all of the detail of it before making a decision."

Commenting, SNP Spokesperson on Social Justice, Neil Gray MP said:

“Labour are letting down people who are suffering because of Tory social security cuts. We don’t need a review of Universal Credit – we know what the problems are – we just need action.

“Labour need to stop with tokenistic policy announcements that will do nothing to provide real change and restore value to social security.

“The SNP has long campaigned to fix the problems with Universal Credit – scrapping it at this point has been rejected by major stakeholders including National Audit Office, and scrapping it wouldn’t reverse all the cuts that are pushing families into poverty and destitution.”

Asked whether she would scrap it, Ms Greenwood told The Mirror: "We're not ruling anything out, because we think it's important to be on top of all of the detail of it before making a decision."
