Ian Blackford MP has called on the Prime Minister to finally put an end to Tory austerity – warning millions of families are still being made to pay a price ten years after the financial crisis.

A decade since the economic crash, and ahead of the forthcoming UK Budget, the SNP Westminster Leader said years of UK government cuts had left families worse off – with real wages falling, and an extreme Tory Brexit now threatening to make the country even poorer.

Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), published today, revealed that on average people's real annual wages in the UK are now £800 lower than they were a decade ago.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“The Tories must finally end their years of austerity cuts, which have left millions of families poorer and worse off.

“A decade has passed since the financial crash - but the UK government is still making the poorest in society pay the price.

“Real wages have fallen by an average of £800, and Tory plans for an extreme Brexit threaten to increase the cost of living for households by hundreds of pounds more.

“Families who are struggling to get by have been completely abandoned by the UK government.

“As the Prime Minister sleep walks off the Brexit cliff edge she is proving she is incapable of leadership – and her own backbenchers know it.

“The Prime Minister must put an end to Tory austerity now, and ditch her damaging plans for a hard Brexit - or admit her party is completely unfit for government.”
