MUNDELL FAILS TO RULE OUT FURTHER TORY POWER GRAB

COMMENTS OPEN DOOR FOR WESTMINSTER DIKTAT ON FARMING AND FISHING

Appearing before Holyrood’s Finance and Constitution Committee this morning, David Mundell refused to guarantee, despite repeated questioning, that Westminster would not impose policy on Scotland in devolved areas such as fishing and farming after Brexit.

The Tory government has named 24 powers they are taking away from the Scottish Parliament through the EU Withdrawal Act– despite the fact the Scottish Parliament refused to consent to this damaging legislation that completely undermines the devolution

settlement.

SNP MSP Willie Coffey, who sits on Holyrood’s Finance and Constitution Committee, commented:

“Despite repeated questioning, David Mundell has refused to guarantee that Westminster will not impose frameworks on Scotland in devolved areas like fishing and farming after Brexit.

“The Tories think they can do whatever they want to Scotland and get away with it. Mr Mundell has now made it clear he’s opening the door for Westminster to launch another power grab on the Scottish Parliament.

“The Scottish Government has repeatedly said it is not against UK-wide frameworks in principle but these must be agreed and in Scotland’s interests. But the Tories are gearing up to impose them regardless of what people in Scotland think.

“Once again Mr Mundell has demonstrated the Tories' contempt for devolution.

“It is also extremely concerning that the Scottish Secretary refused to rule out supporting a catastrophic no deal Brexit, putting the right-wing of the Tory party ahead of Scottish jobs and living standards.”
