MORE PUPILS GOING BACK TO NEWLY BUILT AND REFURBISHED SCHOOLS

SNP MAKING SCHOOLS “FIT FOR THE FUTURE”

The SNP has highlighted figures showing the Scottish Government’s strong record on rebuilding and refurbishing Scotland’s school estate – with more pupils across Scotland returning to school this week to new school buildings.

The total number of schools rebuilds or refurbishments completed since the SNP came to power in 2007 is over 750 – well over double the total number of rebuilds and refurbishments undertaken by the Labour/Lib Dem administration between 1999 and 2007.

The SNP has made education its priority for this term in government – and ensuring all children have safe and modern places in which to learn is a vital part of improving attainment across the board.

Commenting, SNP MSP Jenny Gilruth, a former teacher, said:

“The SNP’s track record in investing in improving our school estate is second to none – and puts the previous Labour/Lib Dem administration to shame.

“For over 750 school builds or refurbishments to be completed since 2007 proves our commitment to giving children across the country the best possible environment to learn in.

“With many young people from across Scotland heading back to school this week, some reflecting on their recent exam results, it is encouraging to know that many thousands of them will be doing so in new or refurbished schools.

“As a former teacher, I know the difference that a modern, accessible and welcoming school building can make to pupils’ attainment and to the performance of staff.

“And we’re not stopping at 750, with the £1.8 billion Schools for the Future programme set to deliver even more new and refurbished buildings by 2020, in every local authority in the country.

“While Labour and the Lib Dems left our school estate to crumble, or put their faith in rip-off PFI deals, the SNP has stepped up to make our schools fit for the future.”
