Edinburgh councillor Ashley Graczyk’s decision to back Scottish independence just a month after quitting Ruth Davidson’s party is symptomatic of people’s desire to choose a different future for Scotland outside of a chaotic Westminster system, the SNP has said.

Ms Graczyk – a councillor in Ruth Davidson’s own constituency – announced this morning that not only had she quit the Tory party, but that she now sees independence as the best future for Scotland, highlighting callous Tory policies on welfare and disabilities, and the inability of Westminster to govern effectively.

Commenting, SNP MP for Edinburgh South West, Joanna Cherry, said:

“This is a massive embarrassment for Ruth Davidson and the Tories – but, more importantly, it is yet another signal that more and more people are ready to reject a Brexit UK in favour of an independent Scotland. Earlier this summer, it emerged that more people were positive about an independent Scotland’s economic prospects than were negative.

“As more and more examples of Tory cruelty emerge – whether it is on welfare, disabilities, migration or anything else – more people will reconsider the benefits of independence, as Councillor Graczyk has done.

“Ashley Graczyk is right to raise these concerns. The Tory record of welfare cuts is causing staggering hardship for communities across Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland – they need to wake up to the damage their policies are causing.

“When people come face to face with the human impact of cruel and uncaring Tory policies that can lead them to seriously re-examine their views.

“Across Edinburgh, 1,240 disabled people have lost financial support because of Tory cuts. It’s no wonder people like Councillor Graczyk are saying enough is enough – and others inside the Tory party who are questioning their consciences should stand up and be counted.

“This kind of choice is no surprise given how chaotic a future under continued Westminster rule will be – and as we get ever closer to a disastrous No Deal Brexit, more and more people will be asking themselves the same questions as Ashley Graczyk.”
