BORIS JOHNSON MUST HAVE THE WHIP REMOVED OVER ISLAMOPHOBIC COMMENTS

The SNP’s Westminster Depute leader, Kirsty Blackman MP, has written to the Chair of the Conservative party echoing calls for the whip to be removed from Boris Johnson over his Islamophobic remarks about Muslim women.

In a letter to Brandon Lewis, the SNP MP warned that Boris Johnson’s comments were “the height of bigotry,” and that an investigation must be launched under the Tory party’s code of conduct.

The SNP has also backed calls by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) and Sayeeda Warsi - the former co-Chair of the Conservative party - for an independent inquiry into the rampant Islamophobia within the party’s ranks.

In a Daily Telegraph article, Johnson compared women who wear the full-face veil as “looking like letter boxes,” and added that they resemble “bank robbers.”

The former Foreign Secretary has since refused to apologise.

Commenting, Kirsty Blackman MP said:

“Boris Johnson’s incendiary remarks about Muslim women are the height of bigotry and utterly inexcusable.

“The SNP will not stand by and accept this dog-whistle Islamophobia, and the Tory party must be firm against such grotesquely offensive and intentional comments – or risk normalising toxic and bigoted rhetoric.

“At a time when political discourse is alienating many, we must all consider the language we use and reject any kind of intolerance.

“I have written to the Chair of the Conservative Party demanding that Boris Johnson’s comments - and his refusal since to apologise - are investigated under the party’s code of conduct. Until such an investigation is concluded, Boris Johnson must have the whip removed.

“We also echo the calls by Sayeeda Warsi and the Muslim Council of Britain for an independent inquiry to investigate and root out the rampant Islamophobia within the ranks of the Tory party.”

Text of the letter from Kirsty Blackman MP to Brandon Lewis MP:

Brandon,
I write regarding the disgraceful comments by the Conservative MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Boris Johnson in Monday’s Telegraph.
Mr Johnson’s remarks are the height of bigotry and inexcusable. No stranger to controversy, the Member’s remarks on this occasion have stretched beyond the pale and have caused great harm to Muslim communities across the UK. The SNP will not accept this dog-whistle Islamophobia and call on you to be firm on calling out such comments.
At a time when political discourse is alienating many, we must all consider the language we use and reject any kind of intolerance.
I call on you to investigate the comments from Boris Johnson under the Conservative Party’s code of conduct and hope that the Member will be made apologise for his deeply offensive remarks. Until such times as an investigation is completed this Member must have the whip removed.
Regards,
Kirsty Blackman MP
