Kirsty Blackman MP has called on a Scottish Tory MP to withdraw a misleading claim regarding VAT on police and fire services in Scotland.

In a tweet, Kirstene Hair, the Tory MP for Angus, said: ‘Thankfully, Scottish Tories ended the SNP policy that saw our fire service pay VAT.’

It was however, the UK Tory government that levied VAT on Scotland’s emergency services – and the SNP successfully campaigned against it at Westminster.

Ms Hair has previously caused controversy for admitting she did not vote in the EU referendum because it was such a difficult decision.

Kirsty Blackman MP commented:

"For Kirstene Hair MP to claim that it was SNP policy that levied VAT on fire services in Scotland is utter nonsense – it is simply peddling fake news. Either Ms Hair has a lack of understanding on the issue or she is purposely misleading people – which is it?

“The VAT charge for Scottish police and fire services was another Tory policy that was completely unfair – they were the only territorial forces in the UK to be charged VAT, costing frontline services over one hundred million pounds before SNP pressure at Westminster reversed this dreadful policy.

"SNP MPs raised this issue at Westminster almost 30 times. With this utterly bogus claim, Kirstene Hair is trying to re-write history.

"She should now apologise and clarify that it was her own Tory government that imposed VAT on emergency services in Scotland – otherwise her already diminished credibility will evaporate completely."
