The SNP has called on the Prime Minister to end the shameful silence and take firm action to root out the rampant Islamophobia within the Tory party.

In a Daily Telegraph article, Boris Johnson compared Muslim women who wear the full-face veil as “looking like letter boxes,” and added that they resemble “bank robbers.”

Last month, it was revealed that Boris Johnson and other Tory MPs had met with Steve Bannon – Donald Trump’s former advisor and an extreme far-right conspiracy theorist, who has peddled Islamophobic and anti-Semitic sentiments.

The call for action also follows on from Tory MP Michael Fabricant’s offensive tweet depicting London Mayor Sadiq Khan alongside a pig.

The imam of Finsbury Park mosque – who was praised for his calm response to the terror attack on worshippers at the mosque – also condemned the Tory government’s response to tackling Islamophobia. Mohammed Mahmoud warned that the government’s approach was “lacklustre, or worse, in denial”.

SNP MP Stephen Gethins commented:

“Boris Johnson’s latest comments about Muslim women who choose to dress and practice their faith freely are grotesquely offensive.

“The comments were not an accidental gaffe, they were a calculated and callous insult against Muslim women.

“The Prime Minister’s refusal to condemn Boris Johnson is shameful and follows her lack of action towards Tory MP Michael Fabricant – who tweeted a blatantly Islamophobic picture of Sadiq Khan.

“It’s about time the Tory party heeded the calls from Sayeeda Warsi – the former co-Chair of the Conservative party – and challenged the open Islamophobia being trumpeted within their ranks."
