TORY HARD BREXIT THREAT TO SCOTTISH BUSINESSES

FRASER OF ALLANDER: “KICKING CAN DOWN THE ROAD”  NOT CREDIBLE

A new survey of Scottish businesses shows the disastrous impact that Brexit is set to have on Scotland’s economy, the SNP has said – as the party renewed calls for the Tories to commit to membership of the single market and customs union after Brexit.

The latest report from the Fraser of Allander Institute showed nearly half of businesses surveyed have seen a negative impact as a result of the vote to leave the EU, compared to only 6% that had seen a positive impact. Three quarters of businesses said that they did not have adequate information to allow them to plan for different potential outcomes of Brexit negotiations.

The SNP has called on Theresa May to stop pandering to the hard-right in her own party and instead put the interests of our economy first by committing to membership of the single market and customs union after Brexit.

Commenting, SNP MSP Stuart McMillan, who sits on Holyrood’s Europe Committee, said:

“The Tories think they can do what they want to Scotland and get away with it – but it’s clear that businesses are increasingly  worried about their Brexit plans.

“The prospect of a disastrous No Deal Brexit – a 60-40 chance according to the UK government’s own International Trade Secretary – should be of great concern to everyone.

“The fact that so many businesses cite ‘uncertainty over the UK Government’s objectives in the negotiations’ as a factor hampering preparations should be a wake-up call for the Tories.

“As the Fraser of Allander says, kicking the can down the road, or sleep walking into a no-deal outcome, is not a credible economic strategy.

“Theresa May must stop pandering to the hard-right in her own party and put our economy first for a change by committing to full membership of the EU single market and customs union. The European single market is around eight times bigger than the UK market alone.

“We have called for this sensible compromise consistently over the last two years – it’s time the Tories finally listened.”
