The SNP has laid down a challenge to Labour – to stop supporting the jobs-wrecking Tory Brexit that is set to inflict deep and long-lasting harm upon Scotland’s economy.

Despite the increasingly dangerous prospect of a Brexit ‘no deal’ situation, and warnings this week over supplies of food and medicines, the Labour party continues to give its fulsome support to Tory plans to drag the UK out of the Single Market. This scenario would have a devastating toll on jobs and living standards and is at stark odds with the wishes of their supporters.
With the Prime Minister’s Chequers proposal already taken off the table by Brussels and continuing to tear the Tories apart at Westminster, the SNP has said the time is now for parties to unite around continuing in the Single Market or risk gifting the hard-line Brexiteers the disastrous ‘no deal’ outcome they crave.
The SNP has challenged Labour to outline how far they are willing to allow the Tories to drag Scotland into financial ruin, tearing up the devolution settlement in the process, before they drop their support for Westminster at all costs.
Pointing to a pattern in recent polling, Labour’s support in Scotland continues to ebb away, suggesting continued support for a hard Brexit and Westminster control is counting against them among voters.
Commenting, Angela Constance MSP said:
“It must be so disappointing for Labour voters to see Jeremy Corbyn supporting a hard Brexit, no matter the cost to jobs and living standards.
“That’s one reason why in Scotland – where we voted overwhelmingly to remain in Europe – Labour’s support continues to ebb away.
“People cannot understand for a minute how a party on the left could ever lend their support to leaving the Single Market – which is eight times the size of the UK market alone - with the catastrophic job losses and economic damage that will inevitably entail.
“Even with a disastrous No Deal being talked up and a power grab underway on the Scottish Parliament, Labour politicians are doubling down on their support for Westminster control.
“Just how bad do things have to get before Labour will drop their unthinking opposition to Scotland having the power to protect ourselves from Tory Westminster governments working against our interests?”
