SNP MP Ronnie Cowan has welcomed the Home Secretary’s decision to reschedule medicinal cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2. This means specialist doctors in the UK will be able to legally prescribe cannabis-derived medicinal products by autumn. Other forms of cannabis will remain illegal.

The Chief Medical Advisor, Professor Dame Sally Davies, concluded that there is evidence that medicinal cannabis has therapeutic benefits.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) carried out the second part of the review, considering the appropriate schedule for cannabis-derived medicinal products, based on the balance of harms and public health requirements.

Ronnie Cowan is the vice-chair of the All-party parliamentary group on medical cannabis under prescription, who have been campaigning on this issue.

Commenting, Ronnie Cowan MP said:

“I welcome this announcement from the Home Secretary which means that medical cannabis under prescription is to be placed in Schedule 2 and available from the Autumn.

“As I’ve previously said, it’s time we reappraised our attitude and moved forward utilising a fact based strategy that does not harm society but benefits it.

“The Home Office have said they will develop additional frameworks and clinical guidelines to ensure that cannabis-derived medicinal products can be prescribed safely to patients.  This must happen at pace to ensure those who require medical cannabis can access it in a timely manner.

“I will be looking over the detail of the Home Secretary’s announcement to ascertain what this means in practice.”
