The SNP has said serious questions are piling up at Ruth Davidson’s door after further revelations this week over the “dark money” funding the Scottish Tories.

Pete Wishart MP has called on Ruth Davidson to confirm whether or not donations from the Scottish Unionist Association Trust (SUAT) were funnelled into the 2017 general election campaigns of Scottish Tory MPs John Lamont, David Duguid, and Douglas Ross – and whether their election expense returns were correctly completed.

The SNP MP for Perth and North Perthshire has called on the Electoral Commission to conduct a full investigation into SUAT and its links to the Scottish Tories, and said that sanctions including the forfeiture of donations and fines should be imposed if the Commission find wrongdoing.

SUAT is currently under examination by the Electoral Commission, after an investigation by The Ferret website revealed evidence suggesting SUAT – which has bankrolled the Scottish Tories to the tune of nearly £320,000 – does not meet the criteria of an ‘exempt trust’ and would not be a permissible donor – meaning donations could be unlawful.

Commenting, Pete Wishart MP said:

“Serious questions are now piling up at Ruth Davidson’s door over the dark money that is funding the Scottish Tories.

“Ruth Davidson must come clean, and tell the public if donations from the Scottish Unionist Association Trust (SUAT) were funnelled into the election campaigns of Tory MPs John Lamont, David Duguid and Douglas Ross?

“The Scottish Tories must also reveal if the election expense returns of John Lamont, David Duguid and Douglas Ross were correctly completed?

“It’s time the Electoral Commission used its powers to crack down on rule breaking, cheating and dark money. If the Commission find wrongdoing, we must see forfeiture of donations as well as fines – we think the scale and range of SUAT activity merits both sanctions.”
