SNP MSP Linda Fabiani has demanded answers from the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Esther McVey, following the introduction of new “unduly discriminatory” procedures that prevent MSPs from directly contacting job centre staff on behalf of their constituents.

The new rules downgrade MSPs to second class citizens – allowing only Westminster Members of Parliament to contact the Job Centre Complaints Resolution Team to discuss problems with Employment Support Allowance, Job Seekers Allowance or Universal Credit.

MSPs are now required to write a letter and await a written response from the DWP, leaving their constituents in limbo without their benefits payments in the meantime, suffering the harsh consequences of the Tories’ failing welfare system.

Commenting, Linda Fabiani MSP said:

“While it is astonishing that the DWP should treat MSPs with such contempt – what’s worse is the fact they are wilfully making it more difficult for vulnerable people to get the help they need.
“MSPs shouldn’t be treated as second class citizens waiting for answers in the post while MPs can speak directly to job centre staff - Esther McVey needs to reverse these changes immediately.
"What is the DWP resolution team’s job if not to resolve problems with the disastrous Tory welfare system?
“If the Tories are unwilling to deliver an effective welfare system that supports people in need, it is time for them to give the Scottish Parliament the powers to prevent even more people being dragged into hardship.”
