Dominic Raab’s appointment as the new Brexit Secretary proves that the hard right wing of the Tory party are well and truly in the driving seat, the SNP has said – as a dossier of Dominic Raab’s toxic beliefs was revealed.

Raab has made a name for himself with a number of hard-line right-wing views in recent years – including suggesting that immigration is to blame for house prices going up, saying that people use foodbanks because of occasional “cashflow problems”, and being part of a Facebook group that called for an end to all council housing.
He also spoke strongly against women’s rights, saying “feminists are now amongst the most obnoxious bigots”, and that men get a “raw deal” in many areas of life. The Brexit Secretary also argued against many areas of workers’ rights, including opposing the minimum wage for under 21s, cutting leave for public sector workers, and abolishing working time regulations – as well as campaigning against human rights protections.
Commenting, SNP MSP Linda Fabiani said:
“Just when it seemed the Tories’ hard Brexit couldn’t get any worse, they’ve decided to appoint one of the most hard-right, toxic voices in their party as the lead negotiator.
“Dominic Raab’s comments on women’s rights and worker’s rights, on foodbanks and on immigration are utterly disgraceful – not to mention his connection to voices calling for an end to all council housing, or his fierce advocacy of welfare cuts and policies such as the two child cap and rape clause.
“This Tory government, already the most right-wing in living memory, has lurched even further to the right with this appointment – it’s Thatcherism on steroids.
“Scotland should be worried – the hard right are now well and truly running the show in the UK government, and as always with the Tories it will be ordinary people across Scotland left to pay the price.”
