The SNP’s Westminster Economy spokesperson has warned that the UK government’s spending plans have worryingly failed to rule out devolved tax hikes or further cuts to Scotland’s budget.

It follows confirmation secured by the SNP today that the Scottish Government’s share of NHS allocation will be £2.27bn. However, the department did not set out details over how the allocation would be funded.

Kirsty Blackman MP added that Scotland had also been shamefully short-changed to the tune of around £2.9bn due to the “grubby” Tory-DUP deal.

Commenting, Kirsty Blackman MP said:

“The Estimates debate should have been an opportunity for MPs to scrutinise the UK government’s spending plans, instead we were met with a wall of silence. The Treasury’s NHS allocation announcement today worryingly failed to rule out devolved tax hikes or cuts to Scotland’s budget.

“The UK government’s refusal to reveal the Barnett consequentials of changes to NHS funding shows the contempt in which it holds devolution.

“The Tory government’s ideological austerity agenda - coupled with its grubby £1bn deal with the DUP - has put at harm Scotland’s economy, its ability to deal with the challenges of the day, and to alleviate the pressure being piled on its vital public services.

“Whilst Scotland’s discretionary budget allocation over the decade between 2010-11 and 2019-20 will be eight per cent – or £2.6 billion – lower in real terms, the Prime Minister has magically found £1bn for the DUP in order to prop up her government.

“The reality is that with the Barnett consequentials in place, the DUP deal should have resulted in around £2.9bn for Scotland. Instead, last year Scotland faced cuts to its budget. Simply put, the UK government has proven that it can never be trusted to protect Scotland’s interests.”
