DECISION TIME FOR LABOUR OVER GRANITE CITY TORY ALLIANCE

Labour’s NEC must not overturn the Scottish branch’s decision to expel Labour councillors for agreeing to a coalition with the Scottish Tories in Aberdeen, the SNP has said ahead of a final decision which is expected to be made today.

The Scottish party handed their recommendation over to the party’s National Executive Committee last month after over a year of deliberating. The suspended Labour council group are meanwhile pushing through over £125 million of cuts to services in Aberdeen in cahoots with the Tories.

Commenting, SNP MSP for Aberdeen South and North Kincardine, Maureen Watt, said:

“This is a complete embarrassment for Labour who are still refusing to expel their disgraced councillors a year after they were first suspended for going into a grubby coalition with the Tories, despite the SNP being the largest party.

“Just as Labour continue to support Tory austerity cuts at Westminster, in Aberdeen they are working hand-in-glove with the Tories, cutting to local jobs and public services across the city.

“This is a key test of Richard Leonard’s leadership, and so far he’s failing miserably.

“He must expel these councillors once and for all and join the growing calls for them to stand down altogether, so the people of Aberdeen can elect the representatives they want and deserve.”
