The SNP will lead a debate at Westminster tomorrow (Tuesday) on the “catastrophic” impact that Tory and Labour plans for a hard Brexit will have on Scotland.

Patricia Gibson MP will urge the UK government to listen to the overwhelming evidence, and back SNP plans to remain in the single market and customs union “before it is too late” - as time runs out for the UK to agree a deal with the EU.

With businesses increasingly warning about the damage Brexit will do, and the Tories and Labour both at war with themselves, the SNP MP for North Ayrshire and Arran will say “Scotland will not forgive or forget” political parties that put their hard Brexit obsessions over the national interest.

The UK government's own analysis suggests a hard Brexit could hit Scottish economic growth by 9%. While Scottish Government analysis has revealed the Scottish economy could be up to £12.7bn a year worse off by 2030 under a hard Brexit - a loss of £2,300 per year for each person in Scotland.

Commenting ahead of the debate, Patricia Gibson MP said:

“Tory and Labour plans for a hard Brexit would be catastrophic for Scotland – leaving the whole country poorer and worse off.

“If the UK government drags Scotland out of the single market and customs union, it will destroy thousands of Scottish jobs, and damage the incomes, livelihoods and living standards of millions of people for decades to come.

“With time running out for the UK to strike a deal with the EU, and the Tories and Labour both at war with themselves, it is vital that common sense prevails before it is too late.

“The UK government must listen to the overwhelming evidence. Short of staying in the EU, as Scotland voted for, remaining in the single market and customs union is the least damaging option - and the only way to protect jobs and prosperity. Scotland will not forgive or forget those parties that put their hard Brexit obsessions over the national interest.”

Patricia Gibson MP’s debate on the Implications for Scotland of leaving the EU will take place at 9.30am Tuesday 3 July in Westminster Hall, and can be watched at: https://www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/a68f1f9d-c223-4e1c-aeb4-9e78fb298663
