The SNP has challenged Jeremy Corbyn to use his visit to Scotland today to commit to membership of both the single market and customs union after Brexit – and to end his senseless support for Tory Brexit plans.

Jeremy Corbyn has consistently failed to explain how his support for a Tory hard Brexit will benefit workers or the economy – with the UK government’s own analysis suggesting it will cost Scotland up to 9% in lost GDP growth every year.

The Labour leader is in Scotland today to campaign on the NHS – which is set to face significant difficulties, for example in recruitment, as a direct of Labour backing for a Tory Brexit.

Commenting, SNP MSP for Almond Valley, Angela Constance, said:

“With Jeremy Corbyn in Scotland today, when better to remind him that Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in Europe and is at risk of real damage from a Tory Brexit.

“It is shameful that Labour would rather support this chaos, than stand up and protect jobs, the economy, and public services such as the NHS.

“Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn are jointly letting down the country – on the one hand there’s weak leadership, and the other offers no alternative. And, ultimately, Scottish families will pay the price.

“The UK government’s own analysis underlines the devastating impact a hard Brexit would have – sacrificing hundreds of thousands of jobs, slashing people’s incomes, and impacting living standards for decades to come.

“Short of staying in the EU, as Scotland voted overwhelmingly for, remaining in the single market and customs union is the least worst option in order to protect jobs and prosperity.

“It is time Labour did the sensible thing and ended their ideological hard Brexit obsession.”
