The SNP’s Pete Wishart MP has today called on the UK government to bring forward an urgent debate in Westminster over the trail of “dodgy, dark money that is running rampant" through some political parties in the UK.

Earlier, an investigation by BBC Spotlight Northern Ireland shone a light on the practices of Richard Cook, the chairman of the Constitutional Research Council and former vice chairman of the Conservative Party in Scotland.

It revealed that Cook was behind the DUP's £435,000 donation during the EU referendum, and has “a trail of involvement in illegal activity and foreign money.”

Yesterday, the SNP MP for Perth and North Perthshire wrote to the Electoral Commission calling for an in-depth investigation into the Scottish Unionist Association Trust (SUAT) following revelations about its funding of Ruth Davidson’s party.

The Ferret brought forward evidence suggesting that SUAT - who have bankrolled the Scottish Tories to the tune of nearly £320,000 with major beneficiaries including branches in Dumfries and Galloway, Aberdeenshire and the Borders - do not meet the criteria that they are an ‘exempt trust’.

Commenting, Pete Wishart MP said:

“The damning revelations over the trail of dodgy, dark money running through certain political parties in the UK can no longer go unaddressed. The UK government must now bring forward a debate without delay.

“Yesterday, I wrote to the Electoral Commission calling for a full investigation into the Scottish Unionist Association Trust - the murky organisation which has been bankrolling the Tories in Scotland.

“This trust has no official address, no transparency, but it has donated at least £7,500 to at least two members from the Scottish Conservatives.

“However, the recent revelations does not even begin to scratch the surface over dodgy donations and how political parties are funded."
