SNP MP Alison Thewliss has condemned the Tory government after statistics revealed 190 survivors of rape had to disclose details in order to receive Child Tax Credits.

The figures published by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) also showed that the two-child cap on tax credits has hit 73,530 households, with single parent households accounting for nearly 40%.

When pressed by the SNP's Westminster Social Justice spokesperson, Neil Gray MP, at Women and Equalities Questions in Westminster today, UK government minister Kit Malthouse replied that people on welfare need to “make decisions about the number of children they may or may not have”.

Commenting, Alison Thewliss MP said:

“We now finally see the full extent of the Tories punitive two-child cap, which has not only taken away vital support from families with multiple children, but forces survivors of rape to have to endure the trauma of disclosing this just to put food on the table.

“The UK government minister’s staggering and shameful response in Westminster this morning amounted to a declaration that people in receipt of vital financial support shouldn’t have more than two children – what is this if not a UK government-imposed cap on children?

“This is an extremely dangerous comment to make given that stakeholders have already raised concerns that the cap is pushing women into having abortions, for fear that they will not be able to make ends meet.

“This policy could be straight out of a dystopian fiction novel. It puts survivors in impossible situations, and is a horrific policy for which the DWP should hang their heads in shame.

“From day one, the SNP has fought against this policy – the UK government must scrap the abhorrent two child cap and rape clause now to avoid putting families and survivors of rape through more trauma.”
