SNP MPs PILE PRESSURE ON THERESA MAY TO SACK BORIS JOHNSON

UK GOVERNMENT URGED TO ROLL BACK ON RED CARPET FOR TRUMP VISIT

Stephen Gethins MP has asked the Foreign Secretary whether or not he thought he would face the sack if he were working under Donald Trump's administration and described the US President's policies as “crazy”, or if he chose to fly out the country in order to refuse backing the government.

It followed Boris Johnson’s earlier remarks that Donald Trump would do a better job of negotiating Brexit than Theresa May, and adds to the pressure piling on the Prime Minister to sack him.

The SNP’s Westminster Foreign Affairs spokesperson also pressed Boris Johnson over his remarks that he is “increasingly admiring” of Donald Trump’s policies, and asked which policy he is more admiring of - his dangerous trade tariffs, or his policy of separating children from their parents and locking them in cages?

During FCO questions today, successive SNP MPs asked whether or not it was fit and proper for the UK government to roll out the red carpet for Donald Trump next month.

Commenting, Stephen Gethins MP said:

“Boris Johnson has worryingly claimed that he is ‘increasingly admiring’ of Donald Trump. He must now make clear which policy he is more admiring of - the President’s dangerous trade tariffs or his policy of separating children from their parents and locking them in cages like animals?

“He has also stated bluntly that Donald Trump would do a better job of negotiating Brexit than his own boss. So does he think that describing the President’s policies as ‘crazy’, or flying out the country in order to refuse backing his policy would lead to three words - you are fired?

“The Foreign Secretary’s conduct begs the question of what he has to do before the Prime Minister grows a backbone and sacks him?

“He has at every turn actively undermined and embarrassed the high office which he holds. But more than that, he has damaged the UK’s standing on the international stage and strained relationships with our partners, as well as businesses and organisations.

“The UK government also has questions to answer over its plans to roll out the red carpet for Donald Trump. His policy of locking children and young infants in cages is just the latest in a long list of abhorrent policies. For the UK government to follow that with 5 star treatment offers a worrying insight into the direction the UK is headed towards.”
