FRESH MIGRATION STUDY MAKES CLEAR NEED FOR POWERS TO BE DEVOLVED

REPORT SAYS SCOTLAND WILL STRUGGLE TO ATTRACT MIGRANTS AFTER BREXIT

New research by the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow has argued that a post-Brexit Scotland will struggle to attract migrants due to likely barriers being implemented by the UK government – laying bare the need for Scotland to have control of migration.

The Scottish Parliament voted decisively in favour of the devolution of powers over migration earlier this year – giving cross-party backing to the campaign to leave the Tories’ ‘hostile environment’ behind.

The Scottish Government has consistently made the case for increasing migration to Scotland – which is vital for Scottish industries, jobs and public services. The report from leading academics warns of the problems Scotland will face if a restrictive system is put in place by the UK government after Brexit, as seems likely.

Commenting, SNP MSP Mairi Gougeon said:

"This report from the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow shows how dangerous Tory Brexit plans will be for Scotland’s economy – with real concerns being raised about migrants being deterred from coming here after 2019.

“This is why it is time for powers over migration to be devolved, as the Scottish Parliament has called for, and for us to build a system that works in Scotland's interests, not against us.

"There is a growing consensus that the Tories need to do more than simply drop their net migration targets, and instead either maintain or increase migration levels across Scotland.

“Their plans to cut net migration to the tens of thousands is expected to cost Scotland’s economy £10 billion a year.

“We will not stand by while the Tory government's “hostile environment” approach to migration damages our economy.”
