FORMER LABOUR MINISTER BACKS SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT ON POWER GRAB
CHISHOLM CONFIRMS “MAJORITY OF 1997 MINISTERS” DISAGREE WITH SEWEL COMMENTS
Former Labour Scotland Office Minister Malcolm Chisholm has confirmed that he and other former Labour government ministers back the Scottish Government’s position on the Sewel Convention as the debate over the Tories’ power grab continues.
The intervention from the former Labour party Minister shows a growing consensus across the political divide over protecting the powers of the Scottish Parliament and the devolution settlement.
Commenting, SNP MSP Ben Macpherson, who succeeded Malcolm Chisholm as MSP for Edinburgh Northern and Leith, said:
“This is an important intervention by Malcolm Chisholm, who has always been a respected voice on devolution.
“As a key member of the UK government during the period when our devolved Parliament was being delivered by the people of Scotland, Malcolm Chisholm’s opinions on this issue are significant – as are those of his former colleagues.
“It is significant that some of those most closely involved with the devolution process two decades ago are now explicit in their opposition to the Tory power grab.
“Scotland’s Parliament must be protected – we cannot allow the Tories to take powers away from our Parliament. Not now, not ever.”
Malcolm Chisholm tweeted: “The majority of surviving Scottish Office Ministers from 1997 disagree with him [Sewel] I think he may have been got at by some of his House of Lords colleagues!”
