The SNP has demanded that powers over migration come to Holyrood to allow Scotland to develop a migration system that fits the needs of our communities – after it was revealed that over 2,300 doctors were refused visas between November 2017 and April 2018 as part of the Tories’ hostile environment policy.

The figures, released under Freedom of Information, show how many highly skilled professionals the Tories are prepared to turn away in order to fulfil their own reckless net migration targets – no matter the damage this causes for vital public services such as the NHS.

The SNP is now renewing calls for powers over migration to come to Holyrood so that Scotland can develop a differentiated migration system to suit the needs of our communities, and to better enable us to find the staff we need in our NHS.

Commenting, SNP MSP Sandra White, who sits on Holyrood’s Health committee, said:

“These figures are absolutely staggering – and yet another signal of how damaging Tory migration policy is for Scotland.

“We have been making the positive case for migration for years now, but we’re denied the powers to attract talent from elsewhere. Instead we have to abide by Tory policies that seriously harm our NHS and other public services.

“We cannot afford to turn away 2,360 qualified doctors who want to work in our NHS in the space of five months. The fact that this has been allowed to happen shows the Tories don’t have Scotland’s best interests at heart.

“The Scottish Parliament gave cross-party backing to Scotland gaining powers over migration – allowing us to attract and value migrants as opposed to constantly trying to deport them.

“It’s time the Tories listened to Scotland’s voice and allowed us to support our public services.”
